Based on the Ingmar
Bergman film Smiles of a Summer Night, this Stephen Sondheim musical,
concerns three mismatched couples. Lawyer Frederik Egerman is married to
the still-virginal Anne, who is half his age, but soon renews an old
relationship with Desiree Armfeldt, an actress. Desiree is also involved
with her dragoon Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm who is married to Charlotte.
Frederick’s son is Henrik who loves his stepmother Anne, who is a year
younger than him. The maid Petra together with Desiree's mother Madame
Armfeldt and daughter Frederica complete the jigsaw and the action occurs
in town and at "A Weekend in the Country" at Madame Armfeldt's house in
the land of the midnight sun. The musical features a lieder quintet as a
Greek chorus and includes one of Sondheim’s most famous songs...........
